Hope in the Midst of Distress
The psalmist honestly expresses an inner struggle we all face at times: the sorrow of the soul and the weight of anxiety. Yet he doesn’t remain in despair—he speaks truth to himself: “Put your hope in God.”
“Why, my soul, are you downcast? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God.” (Psalm 42:11, NIV)
The psalmist honestly expresses an inner struggle we all face at times: the sorrow of the soul and the weight of anxiety. Yet he doesn’t remain in despair—he speaks truth to himself: “Put your hope in God.”
This is a declaration of faith that turns pain into praise—not because circumstances immediately change, but because the gaze shifts to the God who saves and sustains.
Jesus, our Savior, also knew anguish in Gethsemane, and even then, He trusted the Father’s will. He is our perfect model of living hope.
Are you wrestling with sorrow or anxiety today? Speak to your soul like the psalmist did: “Hope in God, my Savior and my God.”
Today’s prayer
Prayer:
Abba Father, thank You for giving me Your beloved only Son, Jesus, for my salvation. Even when my soul is troubled, today I choose to put my hope in You. Remind me that You are my salvation, my refuge, and my faithful God. I lift this prayer with thanksgiving. In the name of our Lord Jesus. Amen.
