Rooted in Trust

The prophet Jeremiah presents a clear contrast. One person makes human strength the foundation of life and gradually turns the heart away from God. Another trusts in the Lord and places all confidence in Him.

But blessed is the one who trusts in the LORD, whose confidence is in him. Jeremiah 17:7, NIV

The prophet Jeremiah presents a clear contrast. One person makes human strength the foundation of life and gradually turns the heart away from God. Another trusts in the Lord and places all confidence in Him.

This does not mean rejecting the help, counsel, or abilities God provides through other people. It means refusing to treat human resources, personal strength, money, relationships, or circumstances as our ultimate security. All these things can change, but God remains faithful.

In the following verse, the person who trusts in the Lord is compared to a tree planted beside water. The tree still experiences heat and drought, but its roots reach a constant source. In the same way, trusting God does not guarantee a life without uncertainty, loss, or difficulty. It means remaining rooted in Him when circumstances become difficult.

Trust is also not passivity. We must act responsibly, seek wisdom, work diligently, and make careful decisions. Yet after doing what is ours to do, we entrust the outcome to God. Our peace comes not from controlling everything, but from knowing the One who sustains us.

Pause and reflect

Identify one situation in which fear has caused you to depend entirely on your own strength, another person, or the need to control the outcome. Ask yourself: “What responsible action can I take today, and what result must I place in God’s hands?” Take that faithful step and then release to the Lord what you cannot control. Ask God, in the name of His Son Jesus, to remove from your heart everything that does not come from the fruit of the Holy Spirit, to fill you with His Holy Spirit, and to deepen your roots in His truth so that you can remain firm during difficult seasons.

Today’s prayer

Abba Father, You are faithful and unchanging. Forgive me for the times when I have placed my ultimate confidence in my own strength, in other people, or in circumstances instead of trusting You. Give me wisdom to act responsibly and humility to place the results in Your hands. When seasons of heat and drought arrive, keep my heart rooted in Your Word and sustained by Your presence. Remove from my heart everything that does not come from the fruit of the Holy Spirit and fill me with Your Holy Spirit. Help me trust You, remain firm, and continue bearing fruit in every season. I ask this in the name of Your beloved Son Jesus. Amen.
