Everything belongs to the Lord
King David begins this psalm by declaring a foundational truth: God is the Creator and rightful Lord of the entire earth. Everything we see, everything we possess, and every person who inhabits the world ultimately belongs to Him.
The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it. Psalm 24:1, NIV
King David begins this psalm by declaring a foundational truth: God is the Creator and rightful Lord of the entire earth. Everything we see, everything we possess, and every person who inhabits the world ultimately belongs to Him.
This truth changes the way we understand our lives. Our time, abilities, opportunities, possessions, and bodies are not independent from God; they have been entrusted to us. We are called to use them responsibly, gratefully, and according to His purpose.
Recognizing that every person belongs to God also changes the way we treat others. No one should be used, despised, or considered worthless. Jesus gave His life to rescue us and showed us the value that every human life has before God.
When we remember who the true Owner is, pride gives way to gratitude, selfishness gives way to generosity, and anxiety gives way to trust. The God who owns the earth is also the Father who cares for His children.
Pause and reflect
Consider something you have been treating as if it belonged only to you: your time, money, abilities, plans, work, or relationships. Place it before God today and ask Him how you can use it to honor Him and serve others. Ask God, in the name of His Son Jesus, to remove from your heart everything that does not come from the fruit of the Holy Spirit and to fill you with His Holy Spirit. Choose one practical way to care responsibly for what He has entrusted to you.
Today’s prayer
Abba Father, the earth and everything in it belong to You. Thank You for the life, abilities, opportunities, and resources You have entrusted to me. Forgive me when I behave as if I were the absolute owner of what I have. You are God. Thank You for choosing me and rescuing me through Your Son Jesus. Remove from my heart everything that does not come from the fruit of Your Holy Spirit. Fill me with Your Holy Spirit and teach me to be grateful, generous, and responsible. Help me honor You with everything You have placed in my hands and to treat every person with the dignity that comes from belonging to You. I ask this in the name of Your beloved Son Jesus. Amen.
