Sanctify the Lord’s Day

In the context of the Old Testament, this commandment was given by God to the people of Israel as part of His covenant with them. The Sabbath, the seventh day of the week, was a sacred day of rest, meant to commemorate creation (Genesis 2:2-3↗) and to remind them of their deliverance from Egypt (Deuteronomy 5:15↗). This day symbolized a pause for worship and both physical and spiritual rest.

However, in the New Testament, Jesus taught us that “The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath” (Mark 2:27↗, ESV). By rising on the first day of the week, He ushered in a new beginning, leading Christians to gather on the “Lord’s Day” (Acts 20:7↗, Revelation 1:10↗). This day became not only an opportunity to rest in the Lord but also a time to assemble as His body, the Church, to worship, hear His Word, and strengthen our faith together. In Hebrews 10:24-25↗, Scripture reminds us: “And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near” (ESV). Here, the focus is on mutual support, exhortation, and encouragement found in gathering as believers. The church provides a space to grow spiritually and share our faith as a community, reminding us that we do not walk alone in our journey to follow Christ.
