Love That Breaks Barriers

“You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you,” (Matthew 5:43-44↗, NIV).

In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus redefined the common understanding of justice and love. His radical teaching calls us to love not only those who love us but also those who hurt or oppose us. This kind of love is not natural for humans; it reflects the perfect, unconditional love of God. Loving our enemies does not mean approving their actions or ignoring the pain they may have caused us. It means choosing, with God’s help, to respond to evil with good and hatred with love. Praying for those who harm us transforms our hearts, freeing us from bitterness and enabling us to see them through God’s eyes.

Jesus gave the ultimate example when He forgave those who crucified Him. He showed that true love knows no boundaries or conditions. By loving our enemies, we witness the grace and transformative power of the Gospel, demonstrating that God’s love can overcome any obstacle. Is there someone you find it hard to love or forgive? Ask God to fill you with His love and give you the strength to pray for that person. Remember, loving like Jesus requires constant dependence on His grace.
