Words That Build Up
This verse calls us to a spiritual discipline we often overlook: purity in speech. Words are not neutral. They can destroy or heal, hurt or lift, darken or shine.
“Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.” (Ephesians 4:29, NIV)
This verse calls us to a spiritual discipline we often overlook: purity in speech. Words are not neutral. They can destroy or heal, hurt or lift, darken or shine.
“Unwholesome talk” doesn’t refer only to profanity, but to anything that harms, divides, wounds, or poisons the soul of the listener. In contrast, God calls us to speak with purpose to build up and give grace.
Jesus said that the mouth speaks what the heart is full of (Matthew 12:34). A heart transformed by the love of Christ will also bear fruit in speech. When our words align with the Spirit, they become instruments of blessing.

Today’s prayer
Prayer: Abba Father, thank You for giving me Your beloved only Son, Jesus, for my salvation. I ask You today to purify my mouth and my heart. Help me to speak only what builds up and gives grace, so I may reflect Your love and truth in every conversation. I lift this prayer with thanksgiving. In the name of our Lord Jesus. Amen.
