Losing to Gain
Jesus spoke these words after foretelling His suffering and death, revealing the core of Christian discipleship: only by surrendering our lives—our plans, desires, and self-rule—can we truly gain eternal life in Him.
Verse of the Day (KJV): “For whosoever will save his life shall lose it; but whosoever shall lose his life for my sake and the gospel’s, the same shall save it.” (Mark 8:35)
Jesus spoke these words after foretelling His suffering and death, revealing the core of Christian discipleship: only by surrendering our lives—our plans, desires, and self-rule—can we truly gain eternal life in Him.
To save one’s life in worldly terms means to live for self, avoid sacrifice, and reject the cross. But to follow Jesus is to die to self, embrace His will, and live for the gospel. In surrender, there is victory. What seems like loss becomes eternal gain.
Jesus Himself modeled this path. He gave His life in obedience to the Father (Philippians 2:8) and was exalted. We too are called to walk in humility, obedience, and trust, knowing that whoever loses their life for Christ will find it forever.
Today’s prayer
Prayer: Abba Father, today I surrender my life to You. I don’t want to cling to my plans or fear losing what cannot save me. Teach me to live for Christ and for the gospel, trusting that in You I find true life.
In the Name of our Lord Jesus, I thank You. Amen.
