Love rejoices with the truth

The apostle Paul wrote these words while teaching the church in Corinth what genuine love looks like. Biblical love is more than an emotion or a kind appearance; it is revealed through the attitudes and choices that govern our relationships.

Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 1 Corinthians 13:6, NIV

The apostle Paul wrote these words while teaching the church in Corinth what genuine love looks like. Biblical love is more than an emotion or a kind appearance; it is revealed through the attitudes and choices that govern our relationships.

Love cannot celebrate injustice, deception, gossip, another person’s failure, or anything that separates us from God’s will. It does not use the truth to humiliate or condemn others either. Instead, love rejoices when the truth brings light, leads someone to repentance, restores what was damaged, and draws hearts closer to Jesus.

Truth without love can become harshness, while love separated from truth becomes empty approval. In Jesus, we see both united perfectly: He confronts sin without ceasing to love the sinner, and He offers grace without disguising what needs to change. Following Him means learning to speak, receive, and live the truth with humility and love.

Pause and reflect

Examine your reactions today. Do you secretly rejoice when someone who hurt you fails? Have you repeated something without knowing whether it is true? Are you avoiding a necessary truth because you fear rejection? Ask God, in the name of His Son Jesus, to remove from your heart everything that does not come from the fruit of the Holy Spirit and to fill you with His Holy Spirit. Choose not to participate in gossip, deception, or another person’s humiliation. Speak the truth with love and celebrate what is just, sincere, and pleasing to God.

Today’s prayer

Abba Father, examine my heart and reveal every attitude that does not reflect Your love. Forgive me when I have celebrated another person’s failure, accepted deception, repeated gossip, or used the truth without compassion. You are God. Thank You for choosing me and rescuing me through Your Son Jesus. Remove from my heart everything that does not come from the fruit of Your Holy Spirit. Fill me with Your Holy Spirit and teach me to love without participating in evil, to speak the truth with humility, and to rejoice in everything that honors You. May my words, thoughts, and decisions reflect the love and truth of Jesus. I ask this in the name of Your beloved Son Jesus. Amen.
