Being “poor in spirit” doesn’t mean having low self-esteem, but rather humbly acknowledging our total dependence on God. It is recognizing that there is no merit in ourselves to reach the Kingdom; it is by grace, through faith, that we are saved (Ephesians 2:8–9).
Jesus begins the Sermon on the Mount with this statement because it is the foundation of the Christian life: the breaking of pride and the opening of the heart to the redemptive work of Christ. The poor in spirit do not justify themselves — they empty themselves to be filled with the fullness of God (Psalm 34:18; Isaiah 66:2).
When we accept Christ Jesus into our hearts and obey His teachings, the Holy Spirit — the promised Comforter — is given to us (John 14:23–26), and we become children of God. Only those who acknowledge their spiritual need can receive the Kingdom with gratitude and faith (John 1:12).

Prayer: Lord, I acknowledge that without You I am nothing. I declare myself poor in spirit, in need of Your grace. Thank You for opening the door of the Kingdom through Christ Jesus. Fill my life with Your presence and teach me to walk in humility and faith. In the name of our Lord Jesus. Amen.
